Government will today launch Zimbabwe’s first commercial biodiesel plant set to ease the current fuel shortages significantly. The plant, the first of its kind in Africa and only one of the five in the whole world, is the brainchild of joint efforts between the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe and Korean investors who developed the technology. It uses oil seeds for feedstock, and can process sunflower, jatropha, cotton seed and soya to produce biodiesel, an esterised (chemically converted) form of vegetable oils. The Israeli cabinet will officially announce its support for an electric car at its weekly meeting today. The idea is to back Shai Agassi’s initiative to revolutionize transport by building an entire electrically powered system for cars, starting with solar energy, non-polluting electric vehicles and infrastructure to charge the cars - all without dependence on oil.  The cabinet’s backing means tax breaks, among other things. Purchase tax on standard gasoline and diesel vehicles is 84 percent, which will drop to 79 percent on January 1. For more environmentally friendly hybrids the rate is only 30 percent.
