New Jersey Natural Gas (NJNG) has received its first delivery of biodiesel fuel, which will serve as an alternative fuel source for many of the utility’s vehicles. The switch comes after an extensive review of options to reduce greenhouse gas emissions associated with transportation at NJNG.  “As a public utility, we have a large number of vehicles on the road,” said Laurence M. Downes, chairman and CEO of NJNG. “Using biodiesel is a logical next step for us as we continue to identify ways to protect our environment and reduce our carbon footprint.”

On Tuesday, as a triumphant-looking Christian Streiff outlined a plan to take Peugeot’s fight to Germany’s best-in-class carmakers, one listener in Paris sounded a discordant note. “Every time we see a new boss in the auto industry . . . people always speak of radical changes,” he said.  The journalist was speaking of how PSA Peugeot Citroën had historically made strides in areas such as lower-emission diesel engines and “stop-start” technology that turns off cars’ engines at intersections, only to see Germany’s producers parlay them into bigger profits.

The work vehicles of Invercargill businessman Frank Thomas sometimes smell of fish and chips but who cares, he never has to pay for petrol.  He operates Clean-Biz and makes his own biofuel for the firm’s vehicles.  For the past year Mr Thomas has been making biofuel and uses it to run the six vehicles in the Clean-Biz fleet.  It’s a cost-saving measure – biofuel costs 44c a litre to make, he said.
