After six years of research, many car companies are getting ready to produce hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) on a large scale.  Shanghai Automotive Industry Corp presented its HEVs at the recent Shanghai Auto Show. Meanwhile, Chery plans to release its HEV with a nickel-hydrogen cell within this year and Changan¡¯s industrialization of HEV will be launched in 2008.

Shanghai Volkswagen will provide 500 HEVs for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and go into large-scale production before the 2010 Shanghai World Exposition.

Everyone wants to cut costs, and with fuel prices creeping inexorably upward, everyone wants engines and power trains that use less fuel, or different, cheaper fuel. But cost alone isn’t the only factor driving researchers around the world. The spectre of global climate change has most people worried. The debate over “peak oil,” the time when we reach maximum possible supply and fall into an unstoppable decline, is also a spur for researchers and those who finance their work.

Some local motor vehicle dealers have applauded the Government’s 63 per cent cut in duty on imported hybrid motor vehicles announced last week, but say that consumers will not benefit from the policy immediately, as the decision to send those kinds of vehicles to the island rests with the manufacturers.  “I am not sure if such products are on our model line-up, but right now we have nothing on board for hybrids,” said Nigel Pagan, head of Challenger Auto, local representatives for General Motors. “We have to answer many questions before they consider sending certain vehicles into our market, it could be years,” he added.

The number of significant announcements coming out of the Shanghai Motor Show underlines the growing importance of the Chinese Auto market on the world stage, and fittingly, given that the Chinese Government seems far more committed to sustainable personal transport than its American equivalent, the star of the show in technological terms was the next iteration of the General Motors’ E-Flex electric architecture, configured with the company’s newest, most efficient hydrogen fuel cell system to date. This second variant of the E-Flex system uses GM’s new fifth-generation fuel cell propulsion technology and a lithium-ion battery to provide up to 300 miles (483 km) of electric driving. The fuel cell E-Flex is a true Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) and operates all-electric from both hydrogen fuel cell-generated electricity and grid electricity. It is plug-in capable, adding up to 20 additional miles (34 km) each time it is charged, further reducing trips to the refueling station.

The Kentucky Finance and Administration Cabinet’s Division of Fleet Management continues to replace larger, less fuel-efficient vehicles traditionally included in the state motor pool with more energy efficient and environmentally friendly models, such as hybrid and flexible fuel vehicles.  The state’s motor vehicle fleet currently has 26 hybrid vehicles with three more on order. The vehicles include the Toyota Prius, Toyota Highlander Hybrid, Ford Escape Hybrid, Honda Civic Hybrid and Honda Insight. These vehicles replaced larger SUVs and trucks that had been primarily used by field staff in the Environmental and Public Protection Cabinet (EPPC), which estimates that its average fuel cost has been reduced by 52 percent as a result of this hybrid technology.
