Is it the soaring price of gas? Is it disgust at American dependence on foreign oil? Or is it our society’s realization that we are individually responsible to do less harm to our shared environment?  Whatever the question that confronts them, Mississippians are turning more and more to alternatively fueled vehicles as part of the solution.  Mississippi now has 82,000 alternatively fueled automobiles zipping around its streets and highways, a recent automotive market report showed.

TORONTO — Vehicle manufacturers and the country’s autoworkers’ union say the Canadian government needs to take it slow when contemplating emissions control regulations that will affect the pivotal automotive industry. Industry leaders for management and unions fear the fortunes of the Big Three will be hit by regulations to be released late Thursday afternoon by Federal Environment Minister John Baird.

Honda Named “Greenest Automaker” by the Union of Concerned Scientists

Honda, the most fuel efficient car company in America, has earned the title of America’s “2007 Greenest Automaker” from the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) for the fourth consecutive time. The award is given by the UCS on a biennial basis to the company with the lowest overall production of smog-forming emissions and global warming emissions (primarily CO2) in its U.S. automobile fleet.

Cummins Westport Inc. (”CWI”), a leading provider of high-performance alternative fuel engines for the global market, announced today that Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) has ordered 500 Tata low-floor buses equipped with the Cummins Westport B Gas International (BGI) engine rated at 230 bhp and running on clean burning compressed natural gas (CNG). These are licensed by Cummins Westport and manufactured by Cummins India Limited.

Mayor James R. Miron unveiled several new vehicles Wednesday that will cut down on greenhouse gas emissions and cost taxpayers less. A Senior Services van and a highway truck run on natural gas; two Ford Escape SUVs are gasoline-electric hybrids, one for Miron’s use and the other a Public Works Department vehicle; and a high-efficiency Dodge Charger for the Police Department.

Event at the Museum of Science and Industry Saturday Morning
Chicago area middle school students will race to see who has built the best hydrogen-fueled model car at the 17th annual model car competition to be held Saturday, April 28, at the Museum of Science and Industry, 57th Street and Lake Shore Drive, Chicago. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m., and racing begins at 11:15 a.m. in the museum’s West Pavilion. The competition is part of the Chicago Regional Science Bowl sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy and Argonne National Laboratory.

General Motors will introduce hydrogen fuel cell vehicles and other advanced technologies to more than 300 high school students as part of its sponsorship of the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Science Bowl, April 26-30, at the National 4-H Center in Chevy Chase, Md. In addition to the academic competition, students will be given the opportunity to build and race a model fuel cell car and attend presentations by well-known scientists on current topics in math and science.

GM to provide zero-emission cars to Vancouver Olympics

General Motors will provide more than 4,000 vehicles to the 2010 Vancouver Olympics with a third of them eco-friendly by having no emissions. “We’re actively involved in supporting the Olympics, and obviously showcasing our technologies that are cutting edge … and are also favourable for the environment,” company spokesperson Todd Goldstein told Canadian Television (CTV) Saturday. The technology could involve an advanced form of GM’s HydroGen3 — hydrogen fuel cells. The vehicles would be more powerful, faster, and have greater range than current models. Most importantly, they have no emissions.

General Motors has unveiled a version of its Chevrolet Volt electric car at the Shanghai Auto Show that uses a hydrogen fuel cell to extend its range with zero emissions. The experimental Volt is GM’s leading entry in the auto industry’s race to create a commercially viable electric car that can compete with the range and performance of gasoline-powered models.
