United Parcel Service Inc. said Monday it will begin using a 5 percent biodiesel blend to fuel 366 ground support vehicles at its hub at Louisville International Airport. UPS received a $515,000 federal grant to help offset some of the costs of building infrastructure for the use of biodiesel at the airport, according to a news release. The Louisville hub will begin using the new biodiesel blend early next year. UPS also said Monday that it is boosting the size of its “green fleet” by 306 vehicles.
The Atlanta-based package shipper has ordered 167 compressed natural gas (CNG) delivery trucks and has received 139 new propane delivery trucks in North America. The new CNG trucks will hit roads early next year in Dallas; Atlanta; Los Angeles; Ontario, Calif.; San Ramon, Calif.; and Fresno, Calif. They join more than 800 CNG trucks in UPS’s fleet already in use in the United States. UPS also runs about 600 propane trucks in Canada and Mexico.
UPS said its global alternative-fuel fleet now numbers 1,629 vehicles and includes CNG, liquefied natural gas, propane and electric and hybrid electric vehicles.
