Indian Oil Corporation today launched the first auto LPG dispensing station in the State at the Bhambra petrol pump here.   The station will vend liquefied petroleum gas, which would be used as automotive fuel. It is eco-friendly and being an alternative fuel promises to play a crucial role in checking motor vehicle pollution on city roads and increase efficiency.  The product is being marketed under the brand name of ‘AutoGas.’ The retail price of the fuel has been fixed at Rs 38.50. The company proposes to commission three more dispensing stations in the State.

One would come up at the Saila service station here and the remaining two at Rourkela and Berhampur respectively.  While inaugurating the station, company chairman Sarthak Behuria described it as the “fuel of the future.”

As per the Motor Vehicle Rules, 2001, and LPG Control Order, 2001, only fixed fuel tanks can be used in vehicles for using AutoGas. Existing vehicles have to be fixed with conversion kits (retro-fitment) to run on bi-fuel mode.   The conversion kit comprises an LPG tank and multifunction valve for refuelling and withdrawing fuel.  The kit would be provided by approved agencies and fitted in vehicles by an authorised RTO-approved fitment centre.

The high point of the product is that it takes less time to refuel and saves 40 percent of a customer’s expenses in comparison to conventional petroleum products.  Behuria, on the occasion, said, Indian Oil’s Paradip project is on well on track and expected to be commissioned by 2011-12. Work has already kicked off at the site.

On the rising crude oil prices in the international market, the chairman felt a formula has to be worked out to cushion oil companies in the country from mounting losses.  The Government, he said, has to be more responsive in dealing with the issue. Currently, a Group of Minister headed by External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee is examining the issue and a solution is likely in the third week of January, he stated.
